On Saturday September 16th 2017, I attended the Macular Society conference in London with my daughter.

Right from the time we stepped outside the Tube station, I was astonished at how well they were organised. As we stopped to look at our maps of the location of the conference, we spotted two people in yellow teeshirts with Macular Society on them. Every hundred yards all the way to the hotel, on every corner, there were more yellow teeshirted people many with flags to attract our attention.

We were greeted at the Hotel by warm friendly volunteers and shown where everything was. Including coffee and pastries.

The exhibitions were many and helpful and as we entered the main conference room, my daughter remarked that she was impressed by the 600 people who were proactive and not just sitting back and being visually impaired.

At 11 am the conference began with a welcome speech. Followed by three speakers. The first gave a simple illustration of the mechanics of AMD, using a packet of biscuits as an example. When the lowest biscuit in a packet is stale, it crumbles and disintegrates. This is what happens in our eyes, and the cleaning cells wear out and crumble. (Not absolutely accurate, but that is the gist of the talk.)

The next speaker was a consultant from Moorfields who was more scientific. And due to restrictions in time he had to speak very fast. But he gave examples of the many experiences of how AMD can progress, both from the patients point of view and the consultants. He also said that while we question why there are so many cases now, we need to bear in mind that we have an increasingly ageing population. Our bodies are not meant to last that long! Which you can agree with or not.

The third speaker gave a talk on Charles Bonnet syndrome. People with AMD can hallucinate. Some hallucinations can be dangerous, for example one may see a brick wall in front of them that is not there. But there could be the day when there really is a brick wall!  There can be clouds of butterflies or people with odd clothes or shapes. They reckon that it is the brain compensating for the loss in sight. There is research going on about this, but no answers yet. However, at question time a woman in the audience said that, she had had hallucinations for some time, but since she had developed another age related disease they had faded away, and she wondered whether there was a connection and the brain was now concentrating on the more serious disorder.  The Speaker was very interested to hear about this and was going to talk to her more afterwards.

At 1pm, we broke for a delicious lunch of rolls, sandwiches, wraps and fruit. Coffee was in full flow all day long.

After lunch we went to the workshops of our choice. We went to the one on supplements and nutrition. Very interesting. The best thing that you can do with supplements is to study the AREDS reports. I will do a seperate blog about supplement and AREDS in a couple of days.

As far as food was concerned, eat the rainbow, which is what I have said in other blogs before. Include lots of veg, the darker the better, and fruit also darker the better. Red meat, (not processed) is good, especially liver.

It was emphasised that once we have MD all we can do through food and supplements is to slow down the process. But that if we take on a healthy lifestyle early in life AMD along with a lot of other diseases can be delayed if not eradicated. I will add that I believe that even if we do go on to have any disease, if our bodies are healthy in the first place, we stand a better chance of recovery or at least we help our bodies to fight it.

It was also emphasised, how much smoking can damage the eyes.

So for those reading this that don’t have AMD, bear in mind that it is another reason to live healthily.

We then went back to the main conference room and heard another speaker on the latest research. They are now in a position where they can announce success with two people who have received stem cell surgery.  Their eye sight was quite bad but they have now said there is an improvement. There are now another five waiting for surgery. It will be about five years though before they will be putting this treatment out for the public. Even then, at the moment it will only be available for the most suitable criteria.

I could not help but wonder what will happen when NICE get hold of it!!

But, my daughter who stands a big chance genetically of getting AMD was encouraged by the day and learnt a lot about how to lessen the chances of it happening. Especially the amount of time and money that is going into research and finding a cure.

There was an awards ceremony for the best team within Eye hospitals, kindest and most helpful Opthamologist, and the various volunteers within and out of the MD Society.

All in all a wonderful day, and all for less than £25 I must add.

I for one am going to become a paid up member of this marvellous society. You will see their leaflets and booklets with loads of information, in yellow and black enlarged print in the Eye departments of your hospitals. I have come accross their literature in my capacity as a volunteer for my local Guild, Improving Lives. I also belong to one of their loca groups who meet monthly.

There is a helpline for those who are worried and want to talk to someone. And there were also the numerous volunteers who guided us to the hotel, were around with their smart black clothing and scarves or ties with the logo on them, to help and support in many ways in the conference and hotel, many of whom have MD themselves, and prove that life does not end with this condition. We can still contribute to society in a way that will encourage those who are badly affected, and prove that.

So, watch this space for lots more to come as I learn more, and experience myself what can happen in our everyday lives with AMD. Everyone experiences it differently, but it is useful to find out from others how they overcome it.

Can I Prevent Age-related Macular Degeneration?

      These illustrations show the progress of how a person with AMD can experience the decline in vision.      

 AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) is quite a common condition .

The macula is located at the back of the eye and is the most sensitive part of the retina. When it is damaged the centre of your field of view may appear blurry, distorted or dark.

I MUST EMPHASISE THAT IT IS THE CENTRAL VISION THAT IS AFFECTED AND PROVIDED THAT YOU HAVE NO OTHER EYE CONDITIONS YOU SHOULD NOT GO COMPLETELY BLIND.

Ageing itself can cause damage, and there are two types of AMD commonly known as Wet or Dry.

The dry type is slow advancing, and many people will have it for some time before they notice there is something amiss.

The first signs are that you may find yourself forever cleaning your glasses. Or you may simply put it down to needing new glasses or that you are putting poor sight down to part of the ageing process and ignore it. It is mostly picked up when you have an eye test. Generally speaking, it begins at the age of around 50, but since nothing happens at any certain age, that is not a given fact.

Dry MD can slowly develop and once diagnosed, it can be monitored and you can change your diet and lifestyle to help slow the process down.

However, 1 out of 10 cases develops into Wet MD and can have more serious implications. Although with wet MD there are injections to slow the process down, there is still no guarantee that it will work.

Let me tell you my story.

Nearly three years ago during a regular annual eye test, the Optician showed me the photos of the back of my eyes, and I could see white spots. (Drusen)  He explained that these are signs of Macular Degeneration.

I felt quite alarmed because my Mother has it and I have seen her struggling over many years. But this optician told me about a nutritional supplement that would help to slow up the development. We shall discuss that supplement in the group that I hope to start on Facebook.

I already knew of a Guild in Plymouth which helped people with vision and hearing difficulties, so I went along and found a lot of information about the condition and also what aids there were available.

They also told me about Plymouth University having a department where you could go and have regular examinations and also be a guinea pig for students learning Ophthalmology. Not only that but if there was a serious development, they could contact the Eye Infirmary direct and I would not have to go through my GP.

I rather liked that idea, so I went. And for the past two years I have enjoyed talking to the tutors and students and finding a lot of information. They also have a scanner there, and it was fun to see the back of my eye laid out for interpretation.

They have been impressed with my tenacity and resilience to the situation, and how I stay so positive. But I must admit to being quite alarmed at times when I notice more severe symptoms such as distortion, even to the extent of seeing people’s head’s shaped like ET.

I have a couple of other issues with my eyes, such as double vision which manifests when I am tired and with the added complication of the 6th nerve damage. So, eleven years ago it stopped me from driving. Although I had the problem all my life, as I got older I could not control it so well. But that is another story.

The 6th Nerve damage was caused by the forceps at birth. Resulting in what is commonly called a lazy eye. So I am mostly reliant on my left eye, I often describe it as “I can see all right, but it feels like the brain will not tell me what it is I am seeing.”

Because of the problems with my right eye, the Eye Infirmary are keeping up regular monthly checks. If I lose the vision in that eye, I will be in trouble.

Last July I went along to the University because although the regular eye test at the opticians resulted in new glasses, I was still struggling to see. They did a scan and found that it had developed into Wet MD.

Wet MD is where abnormal blood vessels grow underneath the retina, and these vessels can leak fluid and blood, which can lead to swelling and damage of the macula.

The University fast-tracked an appointment for me at the Eye Infirmary (What a horrible name)

After numerous tests, the EI are monitoring me regularly because when it reaches a critical point, they can start with injections into the eye, which will slow up the progress.

The latest development is that peoples faces are distorted and have taken on a perculiar appearance. I have adjusted my own image here so that you can see what I am seeing. me-now-2016Distortion

Some people have claimed that there is a cure, but I have yet to come across any proven cures. The EI and the University certainly have not found any.

But I was asked the other day about whether MD can be prevented.

It is best to start as early as possible to make lifestyle changes. 

Although none of us can guarantee to prevent any disease in our lives, there are things that you can do to strengthen your chances of not getting it. Or giving your body a better chance to deal with any disease at all.

It is no surprise to me that the answer is the same as with many other diseases of the Western world, such as obesity, cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and other modern diseases.

  • Avoid Smoking
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a healthy diet rich in green leafy vegetables and fish.

I do all of these things and also take a special supplement called Macushield.

I am considering starting the Facebook group for this condition, both in helping people to try and prevent it and how to deal with it.

There are plenty of MD Facebook groups in the US, but because our health care systems are different in the UK, I think that it will be of benefit to many.

Also, of course, the nature of the condition prevents people from reading on Facebook, and I suspect that many don’t get the opportunity or are not aware of the advantages of it.

But it may be that you have a relative or friend that you could help by belonging to the group.

Vision and Purpose as we Age.

Many may say that at the age of 72, all you need to worry about is looking after yourself. Your health, your wealth and your welfare.

Yes, folks that is so true.

Taking care of ageing bodies is vital for your health, by *eating sensibly, keeping active and taking good care of the financial situation. Care of your appearance is also important, and hygiene with your personal care and surroundings is essential for general well-being.

Keeping active in the sense of exercise, such as walking, swimming or weight supporting activities, is also something to keep those bones and the cardiovascular system healthy.

And what about your Spiritual and mental wellbeing?

Meditation* is fast becoming one of the ways that people are getting in touch with something more than the outer body and world.

Spirituality, awareness and consciousness is a great purpose as we age.

Yesterday I went to a casual meeting of Damsels, (A national movement called Damsels in Success for women) in which we made up our vision boards for what we want.

Contrary to many older people’s beliefs, there is nothing wrong with wanting things, as long as we are not taking them away from others.

But we were all reminded that our wants are not just about things.

We thought about our purpose too.

We need to think about what we want in the way of why we are here, our legacies to the world in the way of wisdom, service to the planet as a whole and spreading love and peace. How we want to be in our interactions with people, and how we want the world to remember us.

Younger people tend to think about purpose as being what their careers may be or how they can serve the world and make a living doing what they love. That is the natural course of life.

But as we age, it is a good idea to look at our purpose in the last what could be thirty or forty years of our lives.

We had a lot of fun yesterday, and there were some children there too. Adult children and young children alike were absorbed in finding pictures in magazines. Cutting and gluing and arranging the pictures.

Now my vision board is sitting on the wall in my office, and it is going to be interesting to see how it develops.

I did a vision board about two years ago, and three quarters of it came to fruition. So this idea works. It is mainly to help to focus on what you really want in life.

I have published my vision board above for you to see. Some of it is not very clear, but I hope that you will get the gist.

There are holidays that I want to go on and clothes that I want.

On the right-hand side, you can see a picture of an audience. That is a vision I have for speaking to larger audiences. So far they have been quite small.

There is a picture of a choir, well actually I already belong to one.

The picture of Helen Merrin contains the words “Gold not Old”. I am aware that I cannot change my older looks, and the wrinkles, but I want people to see past the wrinkles and see the gold of kindness and support to others.

On the left is a beautiful garden in which I can visualise myself sitting. We only have a small garden where I am living, and gardening is not my forte. But year after year and with some patience, I am gradually building up something like the illustration. But you never know, one day something or someone may turn up to help me make a better job.

There are several little sentences that I found such as “Home is where the heart is”  “See the beauty in everything”  “Why be dull?”

There is also a sentence at the bottom that clinches it all. “Signed Sealed and Delivered”

That means that I believe that it will happen. The Universe always has our best welfare in mind. I never cease to be amazed at the synchronicities that happen every day for me.

I am not saying that life is golden, and things are not tough for me at times, but when they are I am aware of the fact that the Universe does indeed have my welfare in mind because it has everyone’s welfare in mind. We are all part of that whether we are aware of it or not.

Nutrition for Ageing with Vitality.

“It comes to us all in the end.” Hearing those immortal words has become something of a cliche when we feel a twinge, forget why we went upstairs, or notice a new wrinkle when we look in the mirror. It can be easy to fall into a kind of resignation, viewing a gradual crumbling as inevitable once we cross that mythical line into the twilight zone of middle age. The good news? It’s not. There’s much you can do to protect your body and mind from the ravages of time.

 

Not surprisingly, the most potent weapons in staying fit and healthy well into our later years involve treating ourselves holistically. By that I mean that it’s no good cutting the fat off your pork chop if you’re going to sit in a chair all day. It’s pointless going for a daily constitutional stroll if your diet revolves around microwave meals because you never learned to cook.

 

We are what we eat, to be sure, but what about those common traits of getting older, like smaller appetite or less efficient digestion? Are they linked to increasing ill health? They certainly can be; in purely nutritional terms, your body uses the nutrients from your food to fuel the billions of processes and functions going on every day, so if you aren’t getting all the nutrients you need, cracks will eventually begin to show. Without the deficiencies being addressed, niggles become issues, irritations become illness.

 

Lack of nutrients can cause a lack of appetite, and mean that less digestive enzymes are produced to digest what food is eaten. These two aspects combined can result in a vicious circle where not enough is eaten to provide essential nutrients, the nutrients consumed aren’t all available to be used by the body, and the consequent deficiencies mean that appetite suffers. Indigestion or other gastric symptoms can also be an indication that you’re not getting enough of what you need.

 

Naturally, there is an element of wear and tear as we age, but if we prevent age-related decline by being aware of potential potholes, and put pre-emptive strategies in place, the effects will be minimised, and prevention is always better than cure.

 

So, how do you ensure that you are getting everything your body and brain need for firing on all cylinders? Try to implement these easy tips:

 

  1. Eat fresh, unprocessed food – packaged, refined meals are stripped of nutrients. Remember, it’s not about calories, it’s about nutrients.

 

  1. Buy your food from a local source if possible – if you don’t have a greengrocer and butcher within easy distance, there are many box schemes and local produce hubs. For instance, in Plymouth you could choose from Riverford, Joe Brown’s, The Cornish Food Box Company, and Tamar Valley Food Hubs, plus several more.

 

  1. If you don’t know how to cook, make it a priority to learn. Look on it as an adventure, a creative outlet, and a way to maintain independence. Enrol in a class with a friend, or find a good recipe source and cook up a storm with a friend as a social occasion – cooking with and for others is fun as well as healthy.

 

  1. Eat regular meals, whether you’re hungry or not. If your food is fresh and nutrient-dense, having more smaller meals is just as good as having three larger meals every day.

 

  1. Optimise the digestion and uptake of nutrients – a plant-based digestive enzyme is a good way to do this, or you can take a teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar in a little water just before meals to stimulate digestion. If you have had antibiotics, it’s also crucial to restore your gut flora with a good probiotic that contains several strains – in some countries, it’s common practice to prescribe probiotics along with antibiotics; not so here. The fact remains that our micro biome is essential to health.

 

  1. Exercise daily – this is as important for appetite as your mineral balance. While zinc deficiency can cause reduced appetite and compromised sense of taste, not doing enough can impact on how hungry you feel. Regular exercise naturally has the added benefit of boosting metabolism and keeping muscles healthy.

 

There you have it: just a few quick tips that you can put into practice today to improve your health, prevent illness, and hold back the years. Just a few small tweaks can make a huge difference!

Attitude Affects Our Cells.

Are you aware of how much your attitude affects your life?

To some people this is obvious. If we have an “attitude” people can pick it up very easily. This comes into effect particularly with police work for example. If someone displays a certain attitude, they are immediately considered suspicious.

Can you think of a way that you have seen certain attitudes come into play? Someone who gets on the bus or train, for example, can immediately alienate people with an aggressive attitude. Certainly if they have consumed too much alcohol. (That’s putting it politely!)

Have you ever stopped to consider your attitude to yourself?

Did you know that attitude can affect the cells in your body?

Let’s look at Metabolism.

Metabolism is not just about how much you can eat. It is your whole body and your mind.

Attitude has an effect on a cellular level. What we think about what goes into our mouths, affect how the cells metabolise the food. A lifetime of thinking that we need to “be fixed” in some way, can destroy the ability of the cells to do what they have to do.

Thus, affecting weight loss efforts and our ageing.

You may be living your life focusing on how you look, one diet after another, putting on weight and losing it. Eating foods that you KNOW are not good for you all the time can affect the way that your body metabolises it. Carrying on eating these foods and feeling guilty about them, can itself affect your metabolism. A matter of how your thinking can make a difference in your life.

The secret with this is that once you stop worrying about these foods, you could have them. Someone who has never dieted would not worry about the effect that foods are having on their weight, but would probably eat “normal” amounts of them. They may be careful because of the health problems they may cause, but they certainly are not going to worry and get hung up on being a failure when they eat. They get over it!

Marc David writes about this in his book “The Slow Down Diet.”

I spent most of my life, from the age of nineteen and even as a child, believing that I needed to be fixed in some way. My tummy was too big, my bum was too big, I had “child bearing hips”. Then on top of that, I was taught to believe that only Jesus could fix me. I failed at school, I never made the grade, I did not pass the 11 plus! (For the benefit of people in other countries, this was an exam at the age of 11 to determine how you were going to be educated from the age of 11)

So I lived most of my life believing that I was never good enough.

Only now at the age of 71, can I see that I am good enough.

So where does attitude come in?

My attitude of never being good enough has affected my body because I dieted too much. It affected my career as a younger person, because of limited choices. It could have affected my general health if I had not caught it in time.

BUT, in my older years, I appreciate the fact that I can pass on my wisdom to younger generations.

As a younger person, I never knew that my attitude about myself was having such a dire effect. But now, since the age of 67 I have at last learnt that I AM good enough.

I love my body even with the wrinkles and the extra pounds.

I have obtained a level 5 Diploma in Life Coaching at the age of 68.

I am now studying for a level 3 Diploma in Funeral Celebrancy.

My health is good, even though my body does creak from time to time.

I eat whatever I like, but watch the portions and 80% of the time it is REAL food. Funnily enough, because I also listen to my body now, I have a smaller appetite! 

I am happy, healthy, and what’s more, I am living in the Now and have put my past behind me. Most of all I have changed my attitude about myself in my older years. Because of that, I can be a support to people as a Sage in many ways, rather than just relying on the outside world to be there for me.

How old do you feel?

Are you feeling your age?

Many people as they grow older claim that they still feel young inside their heads.

The body seems to age, but the mind does not so much.

But how old do you feel?

Is time such an important thing after all?

Time is an idea. There is no such thing. We use it to measure experience and to keep things under control on the planet. We would have no co-ordination without it, and life would be very difficult certainly in the modern age.

But imagine if you were a pre-historic person. You would sleep when it’s dark and be awake when it is light. In the northern hemisphere, you would be awake at 4.30 am in the summer and sleep until 9 am in the winter. But it would not worry you or concern you because you would simply be flowing by your instincts.

You would not be horrified when the kids wake you up because it’s light and it’s only 5 am and they would still be running around at 10 pm with no worries.

So it is with age.

Which comes first?

We age and, therefore, feel old and allow ourselves to be so, and say that we have this or that illness or pain because of that.

Or we don’t give our age a second thought when we have an illness and just get on with what we have to do?

Yes, the body does slow down, and it may have to remind you of the fact that it can’t function in the same way as when you were twenty. But the key is, that it would have to “remind”  you because you are so absorbed in other things, and not just sitting and thinking about your age.

If there were no such thing as time would you feel healthier?

Are you a victim of your age?

People can be ill, die or in pain at any age. So why let it be the age factor that rules our thinking and the way that we live.

Energy levels do drop, but they will not drop quite so quickly if you live a healthy lifestyle. This includes staying away from junk foods, sugary foods and only eat what I call “real food”.

Keeping active, and I don’t mean vigorous exercise, just make sure that you keep moving. Walking is an excellent way to do this.

Life can be exciting at any age. Whether you are six, sixty or eighty, life is still full of abundance, creativity, allure and fresh starts.

What is Your Ageing or Health Story?

Are you struggling with weight?

Are you active enough?

Are you always at the doctors surgery?

Are you ageing with vitality?

I bet that you could find something that you really want to do or be, but you have a story that is holding you back.

It could be that you believe the reason why you are not able to achieve your goal is a genuine one. But why not just write THE END to the old story and begin a new one.

For example. You have contacted a friend and he or she has not answered. In your mind you think, she doesn’t like me anymore, or she is too busy for the likes of me, or I bet she’s out enjoying herself somewhere and doesn’t care. When you eventually find out that she had lost her phone, or was with someone and could not be disturbed, there is sigh of relief and you realise that what you did was to make up a story. And every time a similar circumstance comes up, you re-write the old story.

Let’s  take a problem such as losing weight. It could be that you have tried every diet under the sun and it has not worked. So you have given up trying. How true is your story? Have you really tried every diet under the sun? And if you think that you have, could there be another way, other than dieting?

Take activity, you may have persuaded yourself that you are an active person and that you get plenty of exercise. You go to the gym, or have tried that, but it makes you so tired and hungry that have given it up as a dead loss. Have you thought of trying another way rather than just giving up?

Visiting the doctor for every little ache, pain or concern, can be a bad habit. Or it could be that you are bored. Or it could be that it is your hobby in life to talk about illness instead of just finding out what your condition is, research it, deal with it the best way possible, put it on the back burner and get on with your life.

Are you feeling your age? Do you feel older than your years? Are you blaming everything on your age?

Are you really bored or are you just lifeless with no motivation?

Or are you still living the old story?

I have just watched a Tony Robbins talk on TV in which he talks about how to win in life. He talks about motivation, strategy and how to infuence people, but he reckons that the single biggest thing that holds people back is their story.

What is yours?

What is really stopping you?

Are you telling the same story over and over again in life and not even considering that you could change it?

You do have a choice! You can change it!

What ever you may be feeling that you stuck in, or a failure at, how could you change the story?

Put a stop to procrastination, fear and using your old story as an excuse.

Food; Friend, Fun or Foe?

For over forty years, I considered myself a victim. To;

  • My Self Image
  • My ugly body
  • The fat on my body
  • Foods that just triggered me off
  • A compulsion to just carry on eating, even when fullSodDieting
  • Dieting to get rid of the fat and feelings of loathing
  • Calorie counting
  • Fat units
  • Food intolerance
  • Addiction
  • My fat belly

It took me nearly a life time to discover the root of why I have always had this battle. One of them being that as a child I was always being told to tuck my tummy in, and as a 14 year old I was issued with a corset to keep it in.

This message was not only coming to me from my Mother, but from my gran and also a teacher at school who was the ring leader in calling me GubGub after the pig in Dr Dolittles adventures.

I don’t blame any of them now, but I did for a long time, even of I was unaware of it.

Many new regimes of eating in our modern days, look at the physical side of control. But there is another deeper side to it all. Much like trying to run a car that keeps breaking down. Just filling it with more fuel, or a different type of fuel, will not fix the problem if it is the battery that is flat. So it is with humans. If we keep just thrusting down feelings, memories and resentment, we will never get to the root of the problem. Our batteries will always be flat.

Getting into the right place is not necessarily just about looking great. When we have an “inner” glow, we can look fantastic.

Part of my inner work that freed me up was forgiveness for all those people who gave me a false message, which I lived by.

I have had quite a journey over the years, some of it exciting, some not, but always challenging.

It is a wonderful thing to be free of the tyranny of forever worrying about my shape and my looks.

How do you go about finding that inner glow, which gives you confidence in yourself, and frees you up from the necessity of the “Forever Diet?”

Baby Boomer Foodies?

The Baby Boomers are the ones that have seen the biggest changes in history where food and diet are concerned. And the 50’s were the beginning of this change.

Foods that we take for granted now in 2015, were not around then in the UK in the 1950’s.

Among them is curry, pasta, many spices and herbs, pizza, and Chinese food. The word “takeaway” was unheard of and the only ready-made food you bought in the shops were fish and chips, which were wrapped in newspaper lined with a grease-proof bag to stop the ink from getting into the food, or pies and pasties. Ready-made cakes were now becoming more popular.

Rice was a milk pudding, bread and butter was an everyday food. We used to love rice pudding, which was made by putting about 2 oz of rice into 1 pint of milk, two tablespoons of sugar and a knob of butter. Place in the oven and cook for 90 minutes in a moderately hot oven. So it tended to be put into the oven at the same time as the meat for the Sunday roast.

Vegetables were carrots, turnip, parsnips, different types of greens and potatoes. Olive oil was kept in the medicine cabinet, and you used lard or dripping for frying. Eating raw fish would not have been considered healthy. Sushi would only have been known in Japan.

Figs and dates were something that you only ate at Christmas. Ice cream came in either vanilla or as a luxury, there would be strawberry flavour. Jelly and ice cream was a party food. Crisps were one flavour with a small blue packet of salt in the bag and was something you bought with pocket money and considered a treat. There was one type of cheese, and that was a cheddar.

Hot cross buns were eaten only on Good Friday, and you had one hollow Easter egg, on Easter Sunday morning. Milk was not pasteurised and families fought over who was going to have the cream from the top of the bottle delivered to the doorstep. My Mother used to scald the creamy milk to make clotted cream.

Food was purchased from the local shops, supermarkets were unheard of. I remember shopping with my mother, going from one type of shop to another because food was not all under the same roof.

We went to the Baker for bread, Grocer for cheese and eggs, (I can still smell it!) and the Green Grocer for fruit and vegetables. The Butcher was where you bought the meat. Shopping was a daily occurrence as we did not have a refrigerator. Milk was delivered by a milkman, which was a tradition carried on for many years and still is in some rural parts of the UK.

Sainsbury’s were the first to try out a Supermarket in the UK in 1957.

Another noticeable thing was that fruit and vegetables and some other foods, were seasonable. You would have been very surprised to find a lettuce in the middle of winter, or a turnip in the middle of summer. Strawberries were only available in May, June and July.

Apples tasted delicious. The Granny Smiths in September every year were something to look forward to, as were the cox’s apples and the russets. Crisp, fresh and tasty.

There would have been no such thing as grazing in front of the television, simply because television was rare in those days. Snacking was something that you took to work or school for midmorning.

Breakfast would have been porridge or cornflakes or toast and marmalade and sometimes an egg.

Lunch might have been sandwiches filled with meat-paste, or corned beef, or cheese or egg. Soup was popular for lunch times too. Salad would have consisted of lettuce, tomato, cucumber and maybe a little watercress. This was the time when salad cream, came into its own.

However, many working class people had the main meal of the day at lunch time (known as dinner) and such meals as cottage pie, pasties, pies, steak and kidney pudding, sausage and mash and on Sunday the proverbial roast. Chicken was a luxury and many people had this for their Christmas dinner and turkey was a rarity.

Mary, who was a child in that decade, told me of the chicken that her family had as a pet, and they had the benefit of her eggs for eating. This chicken who the family fondly called Cynthia, used to sit on her aunt’s head while she did the ironing, to the amusement of the kids in the family. One day Cynthia was missing and they never saw her again, no explanation and no sign of her anywhere. Was it coincidence that a couple of days later there was chicken for dinner? They never found out, it was the Aunt’s secret.

No home was complete without the jam, syrup, tomato sauce, brown sauce and mustard in the cupboard. There would be no other condiments, except if there was some pickle, piccalilli or home-made pickled onions.

The difference between eating then and now, is not so much the absence of sugar or processed foods, but the amount that people ate. There were no stimulating additives to make you want more!

Fat is Good for Ageing Bodies!

So what do I mean by Fat is Good?

Fat has been demonised for over thirty years now. During the 1980’s this demonisation was taken up by the Food and Diet Industry, and big bucks were made.

Yet it has never been proved that fat was bad, with the exception of transfats, which are toxic.

Baby Boomers, those born between 1945 and 1965 were the ones who became convinced that the only way to keep weight off and be healthy was to eat low fat foods. Later generations then inherited the myth and our stores are still full of low fat or fat free products.

People are often shocked when they hear that fat is not so bad after all, and somehow they cannot bring themselves to enjoy higher fat products.

I probably need to add that its the combination of fat, sugar and additives that are damaging peoples health, so don’t go lathering butter on your bread or malt loaf!

It is worth knowing that because many of us who were sucked into this myth, are suffering the results with early skin problems.

Did you know that fats and oils are ESSENTIAL to the body. Fatty acids are building blocks just like protein is.

They are beneficial to our skin, vision, brain function, bone density and hormone production.

Make sure they are healthy fats, and that includes butter! Contrary to popular belief saturated fat does not go straight to our arteries.

There is so much information now, much of it is contradictory, the media confuse people too. Do the research yourself and find out.
