Have a look at this. 

From the UK NHS.

  • Base your meals on starchy carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, rice or potatoes. Choose wholegrain varieties wherever you can, or eat potatoes with their skins on for more fibre.
  • Eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day. Find out how you can get your 5 A DAY.
  • Choose some lean protein, which can be meat, fish, eggs, beans, pulses and other non-dairy sources.
  • Include some milk and dairy foods, such as cheese and yoghurt. These are great sources of protein and calcium.
  • Have only a small amount of foods high in fat and/or sugar, or eat them less often.
  • Cut down on saturated fat, found in processed meats, pies, cakes and biscuits.
  • Cut down on sugary foods and drinks such as chocolate, cakes and biscuits, and sugary soft drinks.

Which do you think it’s for? Losing weight, or putting it on?

Age Discrimination or Just Ignorance?

I am noticing more and more when filling in forms how people over 65 and above are just lumped together in one age bracket!

Yet life after 65 these days can be another 30 or even 40 years!

Is it any wonder that people dread ageing?

Be aware, be conscious, be mindful.

65 is not old!!! As for 75, 85, or 95 the old saying “You are as young as you feel” comes to mind.

Yes, as we grow older we do have our limitations, but you will find that you can be very active within those limitations.

Don’t be lumped in with a label, just because you are over 65.

Don’t let these little quirks like being discriminated as just “65 and Over” be your reality.

Make life beyond 65 a new beginning!

Make life after retirement, creative, wise and fulfilling!

Conscious Choices in Ageing.

I promised a couple of weeks ago that I would write about some of the conscious choices that you can make to help make your third age a good one. So here goes.

Ten years ago, when she and I were 60, a friend said to me “I hate this business of getting old!”

Was she being a victim?

I think so. I remember feeling quite uncomfortable with her perception. She was choosing to be old!

Unfortunately, that’s just what many people do.

“What do you expect at your age?”

As if whatever happens to you will happen, because of your age.

Although we do find that we are slowing down, lose the energy we had, we experience aches and pains, and maybe find ourselves with certain disabilities, we do not have to become them!

Also, of course, keeping fit and eating healthily will make a huge difference. But that is another subject.

There is a lot of power behind the statement “I am!”  People like Wayne Dyer and Louise Hay talk a lot about this.

So if you state something like “I am an old person!” or “I am ill” or “I am a victim of circumstances” then that is what you will be.

You can change this by choosing to rephrase.

Something like “I am aging in the body, but I am also full of vitality in spite of that”

Or “I have an illness” but I am not going TO BE my illness.

Or “I have circumstances in my life that could hold me back, but I’ll find a way around it!”

These phrases put you in charge of how these things are going to make a difference to your life.

How we perceive things, how we talk, what words we use, all affects our outcome.

Be conscious of the good things about ageing!

For example, yesterday I witnessed an employee being treated rather badly by the boss, who was shouting and putting this person down. My thoughts were “I am so glad that I have retired and I don’t have to be in the job market anymore.” My thoughts then went on to “I am so happy and grateful that I am able to have that choice.”

On the other hand, I have not allowed my older years to be just “passing the time!”

I hear a lot about Bingo, outings, a sing song and so on. Nay Nay!!!

My time is spent following a vision.

That vision is to help others and make their older years the best years of their life.

That is exactly what I am doing.

Last week I was awarded with being a joint “Inspirational member of the year!” with a vibrant group of women entrepreneurs that I belong to. I am the oldest member. They have apparently seen a blossoming in me that has inspired them. That is at the age of 70. So you see it is not too late to choose to make the most of your life AFTER retirement.

You do not have to be an entrepreneur or a famous writer, or anything huge.

You can be a useful person right where you are.

Is there anything that you always wanted to do and be?

Do you have expertise in something such as woodwork, gardening, health, bringing up kids, nursing, care of older people, sewing and needlework, cookery, teaching, home improvement, soft furnishings, keeping fit, eating healthily, even how to keep a tidy house!

For the more ambitious, you could do an Open University course.

Become a life coach.

Design and teach courses.

You could make this expertise into something that you could share with younger people. I know a lady who is an expert in cookery and has a wonderful sense of humour. She loves to talk to groups telling them of her experiences and has them laughing with her jokes about her husband.

Some people take up writing on their expertise. It doesn’t have to be a book. You could take up blogging. (Then a book may come out of it.)

I did a life coaching course at the age of 67 and it made a terrific difference to me. This then led on to you reading this blog!

I learnt my computer skills during the last three years.

Or you can just be a conscious Grandma or Grandad. Someone who the kids will look forward to seeing, rather than avoiding because you are so miserable. One way to do this is to keep up with current trends, even though you don’t partake.

Talking about the way things were from an historical, humourous point of view, rather than the “things were better when we were young”, mantra!

I am currently teaching my grandaughter how to knit. Because “Grandma will know how!”
